Are Garden Rooms A Good Investment? Here's What You Need To Know Before Taking The Plunge

What are Garden Rooms?

A garden room is a structure that provides additional space for your home, usually adjacent to the house. It can be used as an extra bedroom, office or playroom, and it's becoming increasingly popular in Ireland. Garden rooms are typically built from timber frames and insulated panels which make them strong and durable. Many people choose to build their own garden room, but there are companies who specialise in building bespoke designs too. Garden rooms come in all shapes and sizes – some of them offer luxury features such as ensuites or even Jacuzzis! This type of home addition may also be referred to as a conservatory or summerhouse.

Do Garden Rooms need Planning Permission?

In most cases you won't need planning permission for a garden room; however, this does depend on where you live in Ireland. We have an in-depth article here on planning permission, which we recommend reading,  although it's best to check with your local authority before starting any construction work.

You should also take into account other factors such as whether your property is listed or located within a conservation area – these could affect any planning decisions made by your local council.

Are Garden Rooms Covered By Home Insurance?

Most standard building insurance policies will cover damage caused to garden rooms. However, there may be certain exclusions so it’s worth double-checking with your provider beforehand about exactly what they do and don’t cover. If you have had an extension built onto the main part of the house then this would usually be covered under one policy alongside regular buildings insurance.

Does Building A Garden Room Increase Property Value?

It depends; many people opt for garden rooms because they provide extra living space without having to move homes – which can be more affordable than moving to a new property.  On average adding a well-designed garden room can increase property values by as much as 15%, though again much depends on individual circumstances such as location etc... Certain materials used during construction might put off potential buyers if they don't match existing fixtures/fittings.

How Much Does A Typical Garden Room Cost?

The cost of constructing a new garden room really varies depending upon size, design requirements & quality of materials chosen etc… Generally speaking, expect prices to start from €25,000, but there are options for everyone and we can assist you in deciding on the right size for your budget!
